Growing Pains

Human beings are a very diverse bunch. All shapes and sizes and colours etc, ones with Locum vet jobs, and ones who profess to be able to read the minds of others. About the only annoying thing about being human is having a face: either you are blessed and have a young face, or you are like me, and it’s old before its time–

I first realized I had an ‘old looking face’ when I was seven. I recall little of Abigail Withnail’s party, other than that her mum wasn’t half bad looking for an adult, and everyone was staring at me. The next thing that happened was one of those things that you can never forget as long as you live: one of the boys that Abigail knew was holding up a photo he’d taken off the mantel-piece and had it next to my face. And the children started to laugh and chant: “Look at him! He’s got the face of a little old man!” they said–

And they were right. Even at that tender age I had the face of a little old man who had worked the majority of his life in a coal mine. And my face brought me only trouble, until I was sixteen–

Suddenly my old-looking face, something I had grown to despise, was the envy of ALL the other boys. Everyone wanted what I had: a mature face, one that the girls would love! So there you have it, life can be strange. So don’t worry if you have a face that doesn’t quite fit in, maybe life will grow in to it. It happened to me!
