We all buy things that our kids don’t need or won’t use.

We all buy things that our kids don't need or won't use.

The first four days my son was home for the hospital he did not sleep. As a single mother living on my own it was very difficult. I was so fearful of something happening to him that I too did not sleep for four days. It drove me to the point of tears nonstop until finally, out of the blue he fell asleep for longer than five minutes. After about an hour of making sure he was really asleep I did too. No one warned me that this was just the beginning. The movies, books, and talks don’t prepare you at all.

Before my son was born I bought every gizmo that was out. He had a Diaper Genie, a wipes warmer, a bear that sounded like a heart beating, and every protection device there was. After about two months none of those things were used anymore. The wipes warmer only went so far. It had to be plugged into the wall and while you really intend on only changing the baby on the diaper table often times you are changing him everywhere but the changing table. I changed my son on the sofa, floor, bed, and changing table. There was no rhyme or reason it just happened.

I really thought the soothing sounds of the heart beat within the bear would sooth my son to sleep because it was supposed to sound like my heart beat from when he was in my tummy. At first it did help him sleep. Then when it stopped beating he would wake up screaming bloody murder. I thought oh poor thing. Maybe he thinks mommy’s heart stopped beating. I soon got rid of the heart beat bear.

There will always be things that we will buy our kids thinking it will be great for them. Not all of the things will be. In fact, I bet I would even go so far as to buy him a hair loss treatment when he gets older. At least we will always have the best of intentions and funny stories to tell them later in life. Maybe they will learn a thing or two from our experiences.
