Why I Love Cheap Bikes

I love cheap bicycles. Why is simple. It’s like this: cheap bikes have something very special about them that no expensive one will ever be able to replicate: they squeal, they squeak, and they generally have a character and a personality that endears them to humans.
When you ride them down the street – sometimes turning peoples heads…for all the wrong reasons – it’s as though they are talking to you. Ok, so often what they are saying seems to be “Help me! I am in immense pain…why didn’t you oil my chain? How can I be expected to work like this?” but still. I wouldn’t give up my cheap bike for anything.
Even when the handlebars are bent and the rust becomes so thick that the cranks barely turn around then so be it: I intend to give my cheap bike the life it deserves after serving so many human beings who were useless at applying oil to a chain.
The other great thing about cheap bikes is that they are usually extremely comfortable, seeing as those enormous armchair-esque saddles are the cheapest to make. I’d take one of those padded beauties over a ridiculous “stylish” slim-line saddle any day.
This argument won’t go very far with an esteemed bicycle enthusiast, of course. They will spout all kinds of rubbish about how this and that is good and how cheap bikes lack behind in terms of technology etc. But they are missing the point, aren’t they? Because it isn’t only about getting from a to b in lightning-fast fashion, it’s also about doing so with a smile on your face.
