The Ultimate Challenge

I have a bit of time on my hands at the moment, so I decided to combine my love of writing, with my illustration skills to make some functional comics. What is a functional comic? Well, the idea it to use comedy and humour to teach an important skill. These comics can be used in instruction manual, websites, or sold individually. I am busy at the moment making my first prototype.

There is a huge gap in the market where parents and kids can’t really communicate about the technology that they need to operate their game consoles. I want to do a six page spread that explains the difference between the r4 card and the r4i. It is pretty technical stuff, but the idea is that one of the characters is a gran who was raised during the war, the other is an eleven year old girl who is into computer programming. She really loves her gran and decides to draw her pictures.

I am personally not a gamer, but my nephew is and he has been helping me get started. If you get a complete computer wizard to explain it to you, it is simply too technical. The thing about a good illustrator is that they are able to find the metaphorical image that translates a complex idea, into something that is easily understood. The little girl in the comic is going to use a submarine, an air craft carrier and a bomb shelter to explain to her ageing nan exactly how games are stored on a card. Then, she is going to use the infamous Enigma machine to explain the all important aspects of the new technology. The Enigma machine turned messages into secret code and this easily translates today when people think about how certain game consoles only play certain games. It is vitally important for our little eleven year old hero. Her parents are very poor but honourable and they would never return or reject a birthday present. The little girl needs her nan to truly understand how a Nintendo ds works, so that she can choose an appropriate bit of technology and enter into the world of the child. I am going to go for the child like illustrations mixed with a bit of Captain America for narration. My regular publisher thinks its a great idea and I have some interest both from over 50’s magazines, so I am just going to get cracking.
